Field Notes #1: Bombay Beach
My first (and still unfinished) photography project is about The Salton Sea. While researching about the desert lake and it's history, Bombay Beach would pop up frequently as this was the "next big thing" for valuable property during the Salton Sea's boom. This was a town built around the revenue from the Salton Sea's tourism...Of course this all occurred before the unfortunate events leading to the current state of the area. Having visited The Salton Sea and it's surrounding areas multiple times, I have been most fascinated, as a photographer, with Bombay Beach. The decaying homes of yesteryear are eerily congregated amongst one another, along the outskirts of the community's grid. From a graveyard of homes, local and non local artists have outfitted the decay with a new purpose of sorts - art installations, exhibitions for the wanderer...Much has changed since my first visit in 2017. The need to create rarely halts for lack of resources; an artist will create regardless.
